Procedure
A solution of 7.8 g 3-(2-(1-adamantyl)ethyl)histidine.2HCl in 100 mL 1N HCl is treated with 5 mL 36% formaldehyde, stirring 30 min at 25° C. followed by 90 min at reflux. Evaporation gives 1-(2-(1-adamantyl)ethyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid dihydrochloride as a white solid. NMR (D2O) 8.90 (s, 1H, 2-Im).
