A mixture of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-2(1H)-quinolinone (15.0 g), methyl iodide (12.3 g), potassium carbonate (21.6 g), and dimethylformamide (230 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 21 hrs. The reaction mixture was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated. Ethyl acetate was added to the residue, and the mixture was filtered. The filtrate was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated to give 8.1 g (50%) of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5-oxo-1,7,7-trimethyl-2(1H)-quinolinone.
