To a solution of 5,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-4-(2-ethyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,4-pentadienal (2.0 g) in 20 mL of tetrahydrofuran at -40° C. was added 6.9 mL of 0.8M (5.5 mmoles) freshly prepared solution of ethyl acetoacetate dianion [described in Example 10]. The solution was stirred at -40° C. for 30 minutes and then allowed to warm to -10° C. After a total of one hour, the reaction was quenched with 1N HCl. The mixture was extracted with chloroform, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 0.4 g of pure title compound. MS (EI): m/e=496 for M+.
