To a solution of 3-ethyl-1,3,9,10,11,12-hexahydro-2H-quino[4,3,2-ef][1,4]benzoxazepin-2-one (4.98 g) in dry tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) was added potassium t-butoxide (2.26 g). The mixture was stirred for 20 mins, bromoethane (5.0 ml) was added, and the reaction mixture was refluxed overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated, diluted with sodium bicarbonate solution (250 ml), and extracted twice with ethyl acetate (250 ml). The extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated, and the residue was triturated first with pentane and then diethyl ether to give 4.40 g (80.3%) of 1,3-diethyl-1,3,9,10,11,12-hexahydro-2H-quino[4,3,2-ef][1,4]benzoxazepin-2-one.
