A mixture of 1-bromododecane (43.5 g, 0.22 mol), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (25 g, 0.20 mol), potassium carbonate (69 g, 0.5 mol) and butanone (500 cm3) was heated under reflux for 24 hours. The cooled solution was filtered and the filtrate evaporated down under reduced pressure. The crude product was then distilled at 142° C.@0.6 mmHg, to give a liquid, which crystallised on cooling to yield 39.2 g (67.6%) of a white solid.
