In accordance with scheme 4, a corresponding 2,3-diamino-6-methyl pyridine (R5=methyl, XV) and glycolic acid were heated at 150° C. for about 1 h. The residue was suspended in chloroform and treated with thionyl chloride for about 4 h. After workup 2-chloromethyl-5-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine hydrochloride (XVII) was obtained.
