Procedure

3-Benzyl-4-methoxy-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one is prepared from 4-methoxyoxindole (4.8 mmol) and benzyl bromide (5.3 mmol) substantially as described above for Epoxide 4. The compound is purified by flash chromatography (SiO2, 25% ethyl acetate:hexane) to obtain the desired compound (36%). MS (ESI+) 254.
