To a solution of 2-(2-ethoxy-naphthalen-1-yl)-3-methoxymethyl-3H-imidazole-4-carbaldehyde (prepared as described for 1-ethyl-2-naphthalen-1-yl-1H-imidazole-4-carbaldehyde illustrated in example 2.F) (2.4 g, 7.4 mmol) in dioxane (30 ml) is added 6.0 N hydrochloric acid (10 ml). The resulting mixture is stirred at 80° C. for 3 hr, and then cooled to rt. Dioxane is evaporated, and the residue is basified with 2.0N sodium hydroxide solution. The solid precipitate is collected, washed with water, dried under vacuum to give the title compound. LCMS 267 (M+1).
