Procedure
A mixture of the phosphinic acid of Example 20 (0.50 g, 1.1 mmol), methyl bromoacetate (0.2 ml, 2.2 mmol), potassium carbonate (0.24 g, 1.6 mmol) and 2-butanone (20 ml) is heated under reflux overnight. It is then filtered and the filtrate is concentrated to dryness. The crude product is purified by prep. TLC (60% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give methoxycarbonylmethyl P-methyl-α-[2-nitro-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxy]ethylphosphinate.
