A 1M solution of DIBAL-H in toluene (40 ml, 40 mmol) was added dropwise at −70° C. over 20 min. to a stirred solution of 3-biphenyl-4-yl-but-2-enoic acid ethyl ester (2.66 g, 10.0 mmol) in dry THF (100 ml) and the mixture stirred for 30 min. Methanol (2 ml) was added, followed by saturated aqueous Rochelle's salt (100 ml), and the resulting mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (200 ml), separated and the organic phase washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), evaporated and dried in vacuo yielding (E)-3-biphenyl-4-yl-but-2-en-1-ol as colorless crystals: 1.94 g (86%)
