Procedure

A solution of 6-chloro-5-nitro-nicotinic acid methyl ester (1.0 g) [prepared as described by A. H. Berrie et al. J. Chem. Soc. 2590–2594 (1951)] in dichloromethane (10 ml) containing triethylamine (0.76 ml) was treated with mercapto-acetic acid methyl ester (0.441 ml) and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour and evaporated to dryness. Sodium bicarbonate solution was added and the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane, dried (anhydrous sodium sulfate) and evaporated to afford a solid (1.0 g).
