To a solution of 0.25 g (0.82 mmol) (4R,9aR)-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-3,4,9,9a-tetrahydro-1H-2,4a,5-triaza-fluorene-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester in 2 mL N,N-dimethylformamide, 40 mg (0.90 mmol) sodium hydride (55–65% dispersion in oil) was added. After 30 min., 0.10 mL (0.23 g, 1.64 mmol) methyl iodide was added. After 1 h the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed twice with water, then brine and were dried over magnesium sulfate. After filtration and evaporation of the solvent the product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (0.032–0.063 mm) with ethyl acetate:n-hexane (1:5) as eluant.
