Procedure
A mixture of 6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-oxo-isoquinoline, Sall and Grunewald, J. Med. Chem. 1987, 30, 2208-2216 (0.39 mmol) and NaH (0.17 g, 0.43 mmol, 60% oil dispersion) in THF (5 mL) is heated to reflux for 1 h and then allowed to cool to RT. Ethyl chloroacetate (0.43 mmol) is added and the mixture is allowed to stir for 1 h. The mixture is quenched with H2O (10 mL) and washed with EtOAc. The organic layers are combined, washed with H2O (10 mL) and concentrated to an oil which is purified by (silica gel, gradient, 10-33% CH3OH/CH2Cl2) to afford the title compound.
