Procedure

0.88 ml (10.1 mmole) of oxalyl chloride was dissolved in 10 ml of methylene chloride, and 5 ml of a methylene chloride solution containing 0.79 ml (11.1 mmole) of dimethyl sulfoxide were added dropwise to the resulting solution at -78° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was then stirred for 30 minutes. 10 ml of a methylene chloride solution containing 950 mg (2.02 mmole) of 2-[(2 R)-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl)morpholin-2-yl]ethanol [prepared as described in step (d) above] were added dropwise to the resulting mixture, and the mixture as stirred for 4 hours. At the end of this time, a further 2.24 ml (16.2 mmole) of triethylamine was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then poured into water and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic extract was washed with water, and then with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, after which it was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography, using a gradient elution method, with mixtures of methylene chloride and acetone ranging from 23:2 to 21:4 by volume as the eluent, to give 878 mg of the title compound.
