Procedure
3.43 g (6.80 mmole) of (2R)-3-[4-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)morpholin-2-yl]-1-propanol t-butyldimethylsilyl ether [prepared as described in step (f) above] were dissolved in 60 ml of methylene chloride, and 2.98 g (15.0 mmole) of B-bromocatecholborane were added to the resulting solution. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 2 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. At the end of this time, 60 ml of water were poured into the reaction mixture, which was then stirred for a further 2 hours. The mixture was then made basic by the addition of a 1 N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and then extracted with methylene chloride. The organic extract was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was dissolved in 40 ml of methylene chloride, and 1.23 ml (8.87 mmole) of triethylamine, 1.65 g (7.15 mmole) of 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl chloride and 10 mg of 4-dimethylaminopyridine were added to the resulting solution. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic extract was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography, using a 7:3 by volume mixture of methylene chloride and acetone as the eluent, to give 2.13 g of the title compound.
