Procedure

To a solution of 155 mg (1.02 mmol) of 1(R)-phenyl-2(S)-carboxy cyclohex-5-ene (See U.S. Pat. No. 5,750,549, Example 158, Step B) in 3 mL of CH2Cl2 at 0° C. was added oxalyl chloride (100 uL) followed by DMF (1 drop). The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature. After stirring 1 hour the reaction was concentrated in vacuo, redissolved in CH2Cl2 and concentrated to a yellow solid which was used directly in the next step.
