Procedure

The product (4.9 g, 0.015 mol) of Stage 1 and p-toluenesulphonyl chloride (3.0 g, 0.06 mol) were mixed together in pyridine (50 ml) at 20°. After standing at room temperature for 48 hours, the solution was poured into crushed ice (50 ml)/concentrated hydrochloric acid (50 ml). The mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (100 ml), and the extract washed with water (3×100 ml) and dried over anhydrous sodiumsulphate. Removal of the ether gave a brown gum which was further purified by column chromatography (silica gel eluted with diethyl ether) to give 2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-1-p-chlorophenyl-5,5-dimethyl-hex-2-en-1,4-dione asa gum (2.8 g; yield 60%).
