To a mixture of 8-chloro-1-phenyl-1,2-dihydro[1,4]oxazino[2,3,4-jk]carbazol-7-ol (0.286 g, 0.851 mmol) in DMF (5.0 mL) is added potassium carbonate (0.59 g, 4.25 mmol) and bromoacetonitrile (0.3 mL, 4.25 mmol). The mixture is heated at 85° C. for 1 h, then cooled and partitioned between water and Et2O. The organic layer is washed three times with water (50 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated. Column chromatography (60 g silica gel) using CH2Cl2/hexane (1/1) as eluent gave 0.2876 g (90%) of 2-[(8-chloro-1-phenyl-1,2-dihydro[1,4]oxazino[2,3,4-jk]carbazol-7-yl)oxy]acetonitrile.
