The process is performed as in Example 2, starting with 1.96 g of N-[(1R)-2-hydroxy-1-(3-carboxybenzyl)ethyl]acetamide in 14 cm3 of aqueous 6N hydrochloric acid heated at a temperature in the region of 100° C. for 17 hours. After an identical work-up, 2.16 g of (2R)-2-amino-3-(3-carboxyphenyl)-1-propanol hydrochloride are obtained in the form of a white solid melting at 194° C.
