A solution of N-(4-chloromethylphenylmethyl)acetamide (1.5 g), 1-(5-chloropyridin-2-yl)piperazine (1.5 g) and potassium carbonate (1.6 g) in dimethylformamide (20 ml) was stirred at 70-80° C. for 8.5 hr. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated to give a brown solid (3.1 g). The obtained brown solid was crystallized ethyl acetate to give the title compound (1.3 g) as pale-yellow crystals,
