Procedure
A stirred solution of 2-ethyl-4,5-dichloro-6-methoxyindan-1,3-dione (1.3 g.) in dimethylformamide (15 ml.) is treated with potassium carbonate (1.26 g.) and methyl iodide. After 15 minutes, the reaction is poured into water (75 ml.) affording 1.3 g. of 2-ethyl-2-methyl-4,5-dichloro-6-methoxyindan-1,3-dione which melts at 157°C. after recrystallization from ethanol.
