Procedure
A mixture of 10 g (54.3 mmol) of ethyl trifluoroacetoacetate and 9.72 g (54.3 mmol) of 4-chlorophenylhydrazine and 1 mL of concentrated HCl in 130 ml of methanol was refluxed with stirring for 22 hours. After adding activated charcoal with stirring, the hot mixture was filtered, diluted with water, and the resulting white solid was filtered. The solid was washed with hexane and dried to afford 19 g of 2,4-dihydro-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-trifluoromethyl-3H-2-pyrazol-3-one (Formula III: R1 =4-Cl--Ph; R2 =CF3 ; R3 =H) as a white solid.
