A mixture of geraniol (355 mg, 2.3 mmol) and isobutyryl chloride (407 mg, 3.8 mmol) was refluxed for 4.5 hours in 9.5 ml of methylene chloride (CH2Cl2) and 2 ml of pyridine. After the reflux, the reaction mixture was quenched over ice/water, extracted with hexane, washed, and dried over magnesium sulfate. The reaction mixture was concentrated under vacuum at 32° C. to yield 161 mg of oil, which was then purified by open column chromatography using ethyl acetate/hexane (5/95) as an eluant to afford 119 mg (yield: 33%) of a pale yellow oil having the following physical properties.
