To a solution of theophylline (1.80 g) in DMF (20 ml) were added potassium carbonate (1.66 g) and 4-(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzyl bromide (2.93 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. This reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated aqueous NaCl solution and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was then distilled off and the residue was washed with ether to provide the title compound as white powder (2.79 g, 74%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 3.41(3H,s), 3.60(3H,s), 5.59(2H,s), 7.08-7.86(9H,m).
