Procedure
To a solution of 1,3,8-trimethylxanthine (0.97 g) in DMF (20 ml) were added potassium carbonate (0.83 g) and 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)benzyl bromide (1.55 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated aqueous NaCl solution and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was then distilled off and the residue was washed with acetone to provide the title compound as white powder (1.34 g, 61%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 2.46(3H,s), 3.41(3H,s), 3.60(3H,s), 5.63(2H,s), 7.25-7.80(8H,m).
