A mixture of methyl (2-mercapto-4-methylthiazol-5-yl)acetate (385 mg), 4-(4-chloromethylphenoxymethyl)-5-methyl-2-phenyloxazole (600 mg), potassium carbonate (400 mg) and N,N-dimethylformamide (20 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 2 hrs. The reaction mixture was poured into water and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, and methyl [4-methyl-2-[4-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)benzylthio]thiazol-5-yl]acetate (750 mg, yield 82%) was obtained as an oil from a fraction eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:3, volume ratio).
