Procedure
A mixture of 6-formyl-4H-benzo[1,4]oxazin-3-one (1.91 g, 10.8 mmol) and 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)piperazine (2.0 g, 10.8 mmol) in 1,2-dichloroethane (120 mL), was cooled in an ice-bath, and treated portionwise with sodium triacetoxyborohydride (3.43 g, 16.2 mmol) over 0.3 h, with stirring under argon. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 h, then partitioned between dichloromethane (100 mL) and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The organic layer was separated, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound (3.52 g, 94%) as a yellow oil.
