To a solution of 6-bromo-7-methyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione (2.0 g, 8.33 mmol) in DMF (25 ml) was added potassium carbonate (2.3 g, 16.6 mmol). After stirring at this temperature for 30 minutes, was added 4-bromomethyl-N,N-dimethyl-benzenesulfonamide (3.0 g, 10.83 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for six hours. It was then partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to give the crude product which was chromatographed on flash silica gel eluting with 20% ethyl acetate in hexane, providing the title compound of 12A (0.392 g, 11% yield).
