After adding Et3N (1.7 g) to a suspension of 3,5-dimethyl-6-(5-formylbenzofuran-2-yl)-4-hydroxy-2H-pyran-2-one (5.0 g) in CH2Cl2 (100 ml), the mixture was cooled on ice, acetyl chloride (1.32 g) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for one hour. Water (100 ml) was added to the reaction solution, extraction was performed with AcOEt, and the organic layer was dried with MgSO4 and then filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane/AcOEt=3/1) to obtain 4-acetyloxy-3,5-dimethyl-6-(5-formylbenzofuran-2-yl)-2H-pyran-2-one.
