Procedure
To a suspension of 0.4 g (10.4 mmol) of sodium hydride (washed three times with hexane) in 2 mL of tetrahydrofuran was added 1.6 mL (10.4 mmol) of diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate. The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 15 minutes. To the mixture was added a solution of 3.0 g (8.7 mmol) of material from Example 45 in 15 mL of tetrahydrofuran. After stirring for two hours, the mixture was diluted with 25 mL of water and extracted three times with 20 mL each of ethyl ether. The combined organics were dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Chromatography (150 g of silica gel, 35% ethyl acetate/hexane) of the residue gave a white solid which was suspended in ethyl ether, filtered and dried in vacuo to afford 2.5 g (79%) of the title compound.
