A solution of 5-bromo-3-bromomethyl-pyridin-2-ylamine hydrobromide (11.9 g, 34.3 mmol) and (4-methoxy-benzylamino)acetic acid ethyl ester (7.70 g, 34.5 mmol) in DMF (200 mL) was treated with triethylamine (10.0 mL, 71.2 mmol). After stirring at room temperature overnight, the cloudy mixture was diluted with H2O (400 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (2×300 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with H2O (3×100 mL) and brine (100 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered and the solvent was removed in vacuo to give the title compound (13.0 g, 93%) as a yellow syrup: MS (ESI) m/e 408 (M+H)+.
