To a solution of the impure methyl 3,5-diformyl-2-naphthoate in THF (10 mL) at rt was added 1.0 M aqueous LiOH (5 mL, 5 mmol). After 1.5 hours, the reaction mixture was diluted with H2O and washed with Et2O. The aqueous layer was acidified with 1.0 M aqueous HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (200 mg, 19% from methyl 3,5-diethenyl-2-naphthoate) as a white solid.
