An optical purity of >99.8% was determined for a sample obtained according to the procedure above. The determination was carried out by hydrolysing the amide bond (6 N hydrochloric acid, 110° C., 24 h), followed by derivatizing the liberated histidine with trifluoroactetic anhydride and isobutyl chloroformate. A D-histidine content of <0.1% was detected by means of gas chromatography on a chiral stationary phase.
