A solution of 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-(4-pyrimidinyl)-ethanone (21.6 g, 0.1 mol), 1-aminopyridinium iodide (22.2 g, 0.1 mol) and potassium carbonate (41.4 g, 0.3 mol) in a mixture of water (300 mL) and isopropanol (300 mL) was heated and stirred at 100° C. for 16 h. The isopropanol was removed under vacuum and the resulting aqueous phase extracted with dichloromethane (5×200 mL). The dichloromethane extracts were combined and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure to leave a red solid which was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with a hexane/EtOAc to give the title compound as a yellow solid, 9.16 g (32%). 1H NMR (d6-DMSO) δ 7.07 (d, J=5.4 Hz, 1H), 7.14 (t, J=6.8 Hz, 1H), 7.32 (t, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.53 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.60 (dd, J=5.7, 8.7 Hz, 2H), 8.40 (d, J=8.9 Hz, 1H), 8.54 (d, J=5.3 Hz, 1H), 8.83 (d, J=7.1 Hz, 1H), 9.16 (s, 1H), APESI+MS m/z 291 (M+1).
