Procedure

A solution of 1-[2-hydroxy-3-(pentoxy)propyl]-1H-imidazole (Example 29b, 2.12 g, 0.010 mol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (15 ml) was treated with sodium hydride, 0.44 g of a 60% dispersion in oil, 0.011 mol) and stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Ethyl 4-(bromomethyl)benzoate (2.67 g, 0.011 mol) was then added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. The solvent was evaporated off under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with water and dried (MgSO4). The solvent was evaporated off under reduced pressure and the crude product was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, chloroform) to give ethyl 4-[[1-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2-(pentoxy)ethoxy]methyl]benzoate as a yellow oil.
