Procedure
A solution of N-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-3,4-dimethoxyphenylacetamide (600.6 g) in concentrated hydrochloric acid (3 liters) is mixed with glacial acetic acid (3 liters). After it has been left to stand for 17 hours at ambient temperature the mixture is poured onto ice. The crystals precipitated are suction filtered, washed with water until neutral and then dried. Yield: 350 g. Mp: 234°-237° C.
