2.0 g of 1-amidino-4-piperidinepropionic acid prepared in Example 1 was dissolved in 15 ml of 1 N hydrochloric acid. To the solution was added 0.2 g of activated charcoal, and the resulting mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. After removal of activated charcoal by filtration, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. Acetone was added to the residue to give crystals which were then washed with acetone and further with ether and dried to obtain 1.7 g of 1-amidino-4-piperidinepropionic acid hydrochloride as prisms having a melting point of 199.5° to 202° C.
