To a solution of (2R)-3-cyclopentyl-2-({formyl[(phenylmethyl)oxy]amino}methyl)propanoyl fluoride (3.24 g, 10.55 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was added 1-{[(phenylmethyl)oxy]carbonyl}-3-pyrazolidinecarboxylic acid (2.2 g, 8.79 mmol) followed by DIPEA (3.07 mL, 17.58 mmol). The reaction was stirred at 25° C. for 18 hrs. The reaction was concentrated and purified by reverse-phase HPLC to afford 2-[(2R)-3-cyclopentyl-2-({formyl[(phenylmethyl)oxy]amino}methyl)propanoyl]-1-{[(phenylmethyl)oxy]carbonyl}-3-pyrazolidinecarboxylic acid as a mixture of diastereomers. LC-MS (ES) m/e 538.8 (M+H)+.
