Procedure
A solution of acid methyl 5-cyano-2-hydroxybenzoate (2 g, 11.2 mmol) in dry acetone (50 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and K2CO3 (2.34 g, 16.9 mmol) followed by MeI (1.1 mL, 16.9 mmol) were added dropwise. The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at 65° C. for 10 h and then diluted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield methyl 5-cyano-2-methoxybenzoate (600 mg, crude), which was carried through without further purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.11 (d, J=2.2 Hz, 1H), 7.78-7.74 (dd, J=8.8 Hz, 2.2 Hz, 1H), 7.08-7.05 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 3.98 (s, 3H), 3.92 (s, 3H). MS (ESI) m/z: Calculated for C10H9NO3: 191.06. found: 191.8 (M+H)+.
