Procedure

To a stirred solution of 3-{2-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)(hydroxy)methyl]-7-(diethylamino)-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl}propan-1-ol (Reference example 207, 1.37 g, 3.24 mmol) in pyridine (16 mL) was added methanesulfonyl chloride (502 μL, 6.49 mol) at 0° C. After 1 h, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in dimethylformamide (32 mL) and potassium carbonate (897 mg, 6.49 mmol) was added. After being stirred for 12 h at 80° C., the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with a 0-20% ethyl acetate/n-hexane gradient mixture to give the title compound as a colorless solid (341 mg, 0.844 mmol, 26%).
