Procedure

6-Chloro-2-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole (200 mg, 0.909 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (4 mL). Copper (I) iodide (14 mg, 0.089 mmol), L-proline (20 mg, 0.173 mmol) and K3PO4 (380 mg, 1.79 mmol) were added and the reaction mixture was stirred for 10 min at RT. 1-(1-Bromoprop-1-en-2-yl)-4-fluorobenzene (250 mg, 1.17 mmol) was added dropwise and the reaction mixture was purged with nitrogen. The reaction mixture was heated at 85° C. overnight (prolonged heating in some cases was required). DMF was evaporated under reduced pressure, the residue was diluted with water, and the solid was filtered. The solid material was purified by silica gel chromatography (100-200 mesh) eluting with 0-5% MeOH-DCM. 1H NMR (CD3OD, oxalate salt) δ (ppm): 7.60 (m, 2H), 7.45 (d, 1H), 7.20-7.05 (m, 4H), 5.50 (s, 2H), 5.30 (s, 1H), 4.55 (m, 2H), 4.05 (s, 1H), 3.70 (m, 2H), 3.18 (m, 2H), 3.10 (s, 3H).
