Procedure

A solution of methyl 4-bromo-3-hydroxythiophene-2-carboxylate (1.42 g), tert-butyl 2-bromopropanoate (1.2 mL), potassium carbonate (2.45 g) and DMF (30 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 2 hr. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and poured into water, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and saturated brine, and dried over magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from a mixed solvent of ethyl acetate and hexane to give the title compound (2.16 g, 99%) as colorless crystals.
