1M LiN(TMS)2 in THF (28.5 mL, 28.5 mmol) were added dropwise at −50° C. to a solution of 2,2-dimethoxycycloheptanone (4.10 g, 23.8 mmol) in 25 mL of Et2O under argon. After 30 minutes at the same temperature, 3.55 mL of diethyloxalate were also added under stirring. The solution was kept at room temperature overnight. 10% solution of KH2PO4 (20 mL) were then added and the resulting solution extracted with Et2O (3×50 mL). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness. The crude was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (eluant: AcOEt/cyclohexane 1/9) to afford 3.98 g (65% yield) as a colorless oil.
