To a mixture of (4-methanesulfonyl-phenoxy)-acetonitrile (2 g, 9.5 mmol), K2CO3 (1.3 g, 9.5 mmol) in H2O (30 mL) and EtOH (15 mL) was added hydroxylamine hydrogenchloride (1.32 g, 19 mmol). The mixture was heated under reflux overnight, cooled and ethanol was removed in vacuo and the residue was extracted with EtOAc (150 mL). The organic layer was washed successively with H2O and brine. After drying (Na2SO4), the solvent was removed to afford the desired product.
