HCl was bubbled through a mixture of 4-methylamino-3-nitrobenzoic acid (7.41 g, 37.8 mmol), DMF (60 mL) and MeOH (250 mL) at reflux for 10 h. The mixture was allowed to cool, filtered and concentrated. NaHCO3 (aq, sat) was added to the residue which was extracted with EtOAc. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried and concentrated to give the sub-title compound.
