Procedure
Methyl 2-cyclododecene-1-carboxylate (7.75 g; 34.6 m. moles, 85% purity as shown by G.L.C.), was added to a solution of sodium (0.9 g; 39 m. moles) in methanol (50 ml) and the mixture was allowed to stand at 50° C. for 8 hours and then at room temperature for a further 16 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with dilute hydrochloric acid, extracted four times with ether and the combined extracts washed with dilute sodium carbonate solution. The dried (MgSO4) extract was evaporated to give methyl 1-cyclododecene-1-carboxylate (7.0 g; 85% purity as shown by G.L.C.). This corresponds to a yield of 90%.
