Procedure

88.0 g (1.0 mol) of cyclobutane-cis-1,2-diol, 120.0 g (1.0 mol) of orthoacetic acid methyl ester and 10.0 g of benzoic acid are heated from 80° to 120° C. in the course of 3 hours. Methanol which forms is distilled off continuously. Fractional distillation gives 114.0 g (79%) of 3-methoxy-3-methyl-2,4-dioxa-bicyclo[3,2,0]heptane (stereoisomer mixture) of boiling point12 52°-53°.
