Procedure

The corresponding free amine was prepared by adjusting the pH of an aqueous solution of the prepared hydrochloride to 8.0 with sodium bicarbonate and extracting the solution with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate solution was dried over MgSO4 and evaporated to dryness to give a light yellow resinous product identified as methyl 7-amino-3-methyl3-cephem-4-carboxylate; nmr (CDCl3), 2.11 (s, 3, CH3), 2.54 (broad s, 2, NH2), 3.13 and 3.56 (ABq, 2, J = 18 Hz), 3.83 (s, 3, CH3 ester), 4.69 (d, 1, J = 4.6 Hz) and 4.93 δ (d, 1, J = 4.6 Hz).
