Procedure
4'-Piperazinoacetophenone (102 mg) is dissolved in 1 mL of N,N-dimethylformamide. After addition of methyl 5-bromovalerate (0.077 mL) and potassium carbonate (69 mg), the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 65 hours. TLC (10% MeOH/CH2Cl2) should show a single product spot without residual starting material. The reaction solution is evaporated under vacuum. The residue is taken up in methylene chloride, washed twice with water and dried over sodium sulfate. Evaporation of the solvent yields 137 mg of 4-(4-acetylphenyl)-1-piperazinevaleric acid, methyl ester as yellow crystals whose 1H-NMR (CDCl3) spectrum is consistent with the assigned structure.
