Procedure

Isomer B: (±) (trans) 4-methyl-5-(phenylmethyl)pyrrolidin-2-imine, monohydrochloride ##STR224## 219 A) trans-b-Nitrostyrene (63.0 g, 0.42 mole) was reacted with benzaldehyde (53.4 g, 0.5 mole) and 1,2-diaminobenzene (54.4 g, 0.5 mole) according to the procedure of Chikashita et. al. (Synth. Commun. 1985, 15 (6), 527) to yield (2-nitroethyl)benzene (60.0 g, 95%) as a yellow oil.
